COD Spring
Roots of Modernism
Boston
This Spring, the Committee on Design
(with co-sponsors COTE and HRC) will sponsor a conference in
Boston, MA, whose heritage includes the Harvard GSD and the MIT
School of Architecture & Planning, where early modern design
found its American roots. The goal of this conference will be to
debate the early successes and failures of the Modern Movement,
consider its impact on contemporary design and dis¬cuss the
uncertain future of many of the Mid-Century Modern examples of
Modern Architecture that are threatened with demolition, including
one of the most visible modern icons, Boston City Hall. We will
also be looking at representative work of many of the world’s
greatest early modern masters such as Gropius, Sert, Corbusier,
Aalto, and Saarinen as well as contemporary design leaders
including Holl, Gehry, Pei, Polshek, Behnisch, KMW and
Diller/Scofidio/Renfro.
